MUSIC | Metallica show in Lisbon

Music - Metallica - Lisbon show experience. May 1st, 2019.

Hello!

I am very aware that not everyone who reads my blog likes Metallica so most likely this post isn’t for you. However, I do think that Metallica is one of those bands that it’s worth to see live at least once, whether you like or not because they always put on a massive & mind-blowing show!

In my thoughts, that was the great opportunity to go visit my family and friends while combining it with watching a show, but obviously things didn’t go that way.
And I should know better by now…

Anyway, back to the show itself.
It was a bit over 4pm when I, Mr.A and a good friend of ours arrived at Estadio do Restelo, in Lisboa.
For starters, we had to park far away from the stadium, yet walking distance, since it was predicted to be very packed, and indeed it was. No parking spots to be found close by the stadium.

With a nice blue sky, Sun upon us and a God damn cold wind, we scouted the area and eventually stayed in line to get in.
At first, it all looked very nice and neat, but as the evening unfolds, we noticed some not so nice things. Especially the boys…
For the first, I saw gigantic lines to the toilets, but for the men! The guys had to wait, on an average, about 1h in line in order to use the toilets… Unbelievable!!
Taking into account that, generally speaking, in such shows the audience is mostly men, you can imagine how bad they did with the drinks… Who in his own good mind would buy drinks, knowing they would have to wait for >1h to pee? Exactly…

For this evening (and tour), Metallica has two support bands; I’ll just mention it briefly: I don’t like neither of them, for different reasons, but I don’t. This meant, that for me, and I guess more of the 42000 people in the stadium, the wait for the main act, was a bit long.

Metallica shows, as mentioned above, are always a delight for the eye.
Their production is massive, and this time, the stage had 5 huge screens, there was a lot of pyros (thank you, ‘tallica! It was cooooold!), lasers, and all the good stuff.

The 4 guys gave a fantastic first show for this tour, even though they faced some technical problems (a crew guy had an accident, for a while, all 5 screens were off…), they overcame them and delivered a hell of a show, which let all of us 42000 happy (minus the pain in the back and legs for standing for such a long time…).
You could see it on their faces that they all had a great time, and that friends, that always makes the show extra special.

The setlist was also very nicely balanced, between the “mandatory” classics and a few songs from their latest album.

I am super glad I went to this show, with my friend and Mr. A! All in all, we had a great time.
The show was super powerful, and it was obvious that not only the crowd loved it, but so did the band. Speaking of the crowd, I can’t forget to mention how wide the age-range is in a Metallica show. It was nice to spot a few families, enjoying the music (even though I’m sure those kids had no ear protection…) and overall just having a great time together.
These are some of the memories, that stick, no matter what!
If there will be another show, I will most likely attend (if I can!), but then it had to be in Portugal again.
I don’t know, but I just prefer shows back home…
