Music – why do I find hard to like new bands/artists?

Is it a struggle to find new bands or artists to like? Do I get pickier with age? Find all about it on this new post about music, concerts and Spotify. Barbara Santos for www.portysdiary.com

If you read this blog for a while now, perhaps you noticed I am quite a music fan. You may even notice what type of music is my favorite, which can sometimes be surprising for some people who know me in person (“what?? or like that?? Never thought of you that way” – heard this many times…).

When I joined Spotify (quite late, I must admit) I thought it would be a great way for me to find new artists/bands; just like going to a show/festival, when you only know and like the main act.

But you know what? It hasn’t worked quite as I expected.
Let’s break this subject into two: Spotify and Shows.

Spotify

Like I was saying above, when joining this platform, I really hoped to find new artist/ bands, just because sometimes I feel the need of listening to something new.
To my surprise, it happened quite the opposite.
I find myself listening to my all-time favorite artists and bands, instead of just browsing around for “news”.
To my defense, I shall point out that instead, I have been listening to albums of those artists/bands that I would normally wouldn’t. So it still is kind of refreshing, right?
I’m a huge fan of Spotify playlists based on your personal taste or albums you’ve been listening lately!

Shows

Well, this one is even “more severe”, I must admit. One could even say, unfair, up to a certain extent.
Often enough, I go to visit a show mostly for the main act (or headliner, as you prefer), meaning the last band to play that evening.
If a show falls on a working day, I normally take the time to have dinner while support bands are playing, instead of just going straight to show. Well, we must eat, correct?! *priorities*
But when a show is during the weekend, I normally have enough time to go and check out all bands before the one I really want to see.
Most of the times, I find myself thinking it has just been a waste of my time.
Now please do not take me wrong when I say this; I respect all artists/bands’ work but somehow it just does not impress me anymore.
Many times, it all sounds “more of the same” to me, or it just isn’t my cup of tea.
With all this in mind, I think as I age, I became more selective, not just on music but pretty much on everything.
Am I the only one having this issue??
It kinda sucks, to be honest, because to be at a show with let’s say 3 bands, and only liking one, can be quite demotivating, if you know what I mean…
And when it comes to listening to some music, yeah… what can I do?! I like my “good oldies”.
What about you?? Are you an easy listener & easily satisfied with bands?
Or do you find yourself having the same issues as I do?
Let me know in the comments.

See you soon!

  2. hey barbara, for me a lot of it has to do with nostalgia. and I can't seem to bring up the same passion for music that I had at age 13-17, where puberty hit me hard, haha! I used to browse and take in music religiously, studying lyrics and listening to albums on cd over and over.
as for the support acts, I'm there with you – I need to drive 2+ hours to the closest proper venues, so I miss a lot of them. and only about 1 in 10 are a proper 'treat'!
